What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a bodywork system used for thousands of years to promote internal balance and optimal health. It is based on the principle that maps of the body(organs, muscles and systems) are reflected on the feet, hands and ears. Reflexologists will stimulate these neural pathways to encourage the body to re-balance itself. It has been shown to reduce pain, calm the nervous system, reduce stress, anxiety and in some cases of clients suffering from fatigue it can have an energizing effect.  It can bring people out of the sympathetic state(fight or flight) and into a parasympathetic state(rest, digest and repair). The parasympathetic state is where our bodies can best heal themselves. Unsurprisingly reflexology has been shown to decrease pain and neuropathy in the feet themselves and is often used as a complementary therapy for treating such conditions as plantar fasciitis. Reflexology is also incredibly relaxing, sleeping may occur.

Q: Why use reflexology WITH deep tissue massage?

A: My philosophy is this: Deep tissue massage is very effective in releasing fascia, tight muscles and aiding in recovery from injury. It can also be uncomfortable at times and this can take away from the relaxation that we seek from massage. By combining these two modalities we can do the hard work of deep tissue massage and then soothe the nervous system with reflexology afterwards for ideal results. So the client receives all the fabulous deep tissue bodywork with the element of deep relaxation from reflexology and they are able to leave the session in a parasympathetic state, ready to continue the healing process.

Q: Do you offer all three (foot, hand and ear) varieties of reflexology?

A: I only provide foot reflexology at this time.
